Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants Council for 2010The Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants held its Annual General Meeting in April 2010 which ushered in a new Council to lead the Institute till 2011. The 2010/11 Council remains mostly unchanged save for two new faces who have both been instrumental in the various Committees prior to them sitting in the current Council. Tshegofatso Modise joins the Council which also sees her assuming the role of Treasurer as well as the chairmanship of the Public Relations Committee. Another new addition to the Council is Frederik Els, who also assumes the chairmanship of the Membership and Examinations Committee. The BICA Council is at the helm at a time when the Accountants Act and Financial Reporting Act have recently been passed by Parliament. This therefore means the Council has got its work cut out in implementing the mandates of the two Acts, with the Accountants Act establishing the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA) which will entrust the Institute with the registration of professional accountants, certified auditors and member firms and also the establishment of Botswana’s own professional qualification; while the Financial Reporting Act establishes the Botswana Accountancy Oversight Authority (BAOA) as an independent and impartial regulatory body that is to oversee and improve the reporting of financial matters of Public Interest Entities and the corporate sector, and to strengthen the oversight of the accounting and auditing profession.
