BIA 2009 Netball Tournament a Spectacular Affair The Botswana Netball Association Courts were a hive of activity on Saturday the 14th March 2009. The many fans that descended on the BONA Courts came to witness which team would be crowned champions of the tournament. The tournament, sponsored by Botswana Institute of Accountants, was in its second consecutive year after its inception last year. The tournament attracted ten teams, which were seeded into two groups of five teams, further proving the popularity of the sport. The Group A teams included L.T.S., BDO, Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, Botswana Accountancy College and PricewaterhouseCoopers. In Group B, the defending champions, Office of the Auditor General were pitted against Grant Thornton, BURS, Deloitte and Touché and KPMG. This meant that the group stages were to be played as a point system with the two best teams in each group battling it out in the semi-finals. Each team had to play four games in the group stages. The games started at around 9a.m and one could feel the excitement that was brewing among the teams and the spectators as they tried to outdo one another. The day’s events were further complemented by the presence of the disc jockey who was belting out popular songs and the MC who kept the audience informed of the outcome of the games as well as the log standings. The turnout of spectators was also impressive. After a grueling first round of games, it was MVA and L.T.S. from Group A that ultimately reached the semi-final stage. Notably, MVA went to the semis without recording a single loss. From Group B, Office of the Auditor General and BURS made it through to the next stage, with BURS coming from the Group stages unscathed and on top of the group. The semi-finals were such that winners of Group A (MVA) faced runners up Group B (Auditor General’s), and winners Group B (BURS) faced runners up Group A (LTS). Office of the Auditor General managed to edge past MVA in the first semi-final whilst the second semifinal saw BURS crushing LTS. This meant a perfect stage was set for a scintillating final between bitter rivals BURS and Auditor General’s, but not before spectators witnessed the fight for the third spot between the losing semifinalists, LTS and MVA. MVA came out tops to be the third best team of the tournament. The final was such a lively affair, and although closely contested, BURS proved too smart for the defending champions as they walloped them to win the coveted floating trophy for the first time. This meant that BURS got themselves a winners trophy plus gold medals, Auditor General’s got a runners up trophy and silver medals, while the third best team MVA got a trophy and bronze medals. The BIA Public Relations Committee member Devaprasad Arakkal, who expressed gratitude to all the participants for making time for the event, presented the prizes. The sponsors rewarded the four best players on the day with individual prizes and so were the umpires from Notwane Club who had an eventful but an excellent performance.
