BIA Deloitte Golf Tournament - 16 May 2008 As it is usually the case with the Golf Tournament, the Gaborone Golf Club opened around 11am for BIA Deloitte Tournament. The Gaborone Golf Course, specially-designed home of the Botswana Golf Union was the latest step in the BIA Deloitte's efforts to revive the not so popular game amongst accountants in Botswana. Hours before the tournament we pitched up at the Golf Course for the first time with BIA banners and promotional items to mark the beginning of the tournament. In order to get the full flavor of the course, we walked through the course with caddies (in 32 degree temperature with 60% to 80% humidity!) and took photos of the course from the Tournament (i.e., the longest) tees. In as much as the weather was still quite good for a golfer, most of the golfers received good rolls on their drives and felt like hundreds yards of the course would be completed soon.
Despite the heat from the sun , when the tournament was played, the turf conditions on the course were generally good with exceptions here and there. The course is generally easy to walk through, although there are long walks required between the green of the 1st hole and the 2nd tee. The tournament comprised of around nine teams with only one ladies team from Ernest and young. Each team had four players; Due to the unpopularity of the sports to Accountants most of the companies could not form teams and had to recruit players from some of the regular Golfers. The Tournament had one ladies team which was one of the developments worth mentioning. The price giving ceremony started around 630 pm where, all golfers gathered in the cocktail room for snacks and few drinks to quench their thirst. Prices were given for different categories. The ceremony was graced by the presence of former BIA presidents John Stevens, and Max Marinelli, former Council member Frederik Els and some BIA committee members, Mr JM Pongaponga, Never Mudzamiri and Venu Desaraju (Treasurer of Botswana Golf Union).
The Botswana Institute of Accountants would like to thank Deloitte for their continued support in sponsoring the Golf tournament over the years and most importantly thank David O’Connor and his team for their efforts in making sure that the event was a success. Boemo B Gaolathe
