The Council and Committees THE COUNCIL The affairs of the Institute are managed by the Council in accordance with the provisions of the Act, the rules and regulations and any lawful resolutions passed at a general meeting of the Institute. The Council membership consists of the following persons:
An elected member of the council shall, unless he vacates his office earlier, hold office for a period of two years from the date of his election. The Council has power to appoint Committees to assist the Council in performing its functions and at present, has the following committees, whose chairpersons shall be members of the Council. THE COMMITTEES The Membership and Examination Committee is responsible for all the matters relating to admission to membership of the Institute, approval of applications for practising certificates, the general administration of the rules and regulations and all matters related thereto. It is also charged with the supervision of the BIA/ACCA joint examination scheme and the professional level examination held for eligibility for practising certificates. DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE This is a committee, which is statutorily required by the Accountants Act and consists of five members of the Institute, three of whom shall be members of the Council. The function of the Council Disciplinary Committee is to consider cases referred to it where the Council has reasonable grounds to believe, whether upon written complaint made to it or otherwise, that a member or a firm of public accountants has acted in a manner which would give rise to disqualification under the provisions of section 21 of the Act or which amounts to professional misconduct as defined in the First Schedule to the Act. SMME COMMITTEE The Botswana Institute of Accountants (BIA) spearheaded a project, now in its third year, in which jointly with Citizenship Entrepreneurial Development Agency as a strategic partner, a unique service would be offered to the small ,medium and Micro Enterprise (SMME) Community. The Core purpose of the Project is to pursue a mentoring structure in which Citizenship Entrepreneurial Development Agency identifies the client (Small business entrepreneurs), so that the Institute, through its members, may provide a particular client. This service is provided on a voluntary basis at no cost to the client. The core purpose of the project also includes the entrepreneurship development. EDUCATION & TRAINING COMMITTEE This committee is responsible for furthering the accountancy profession in Botswana. To monitor the continuing professional education of members and to initiate various seminars related to the profession for the furtherance of the profession in general. It is also vested with the responsibility of providing career guidance in accountancy. TAXATION COMMITTEE The committee meets with the Department of Taxes on a continual basis to discuss various aspects of taxation. It also provides opinions and suggestions on relevant statutes for the conduct and improvement of the taxation functions for the benefit of the profession and the country. TECHNICAL COMMITTEE It is entrusted with the task of recommending pronouncements, standards and best practices to the accounting profession in the country. It also provides opinions and suggestions on the various statutes enacted or proposed amendments, when requested. PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE The duties of this committee include the organisation of various seminars, conferences and sports events held under the auspices of the Institute. The committee maintains this website and is generally in charge of publicity matters. NORTHERN COMMITTEE This committee promotes the interests of its members and registered students in Northern Botswana. The chairman of the Northern Committee is co-opted to sit on the Council of the Institute. |
